FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is it free?

Your first task is free. After that, buy 10 credits for $1, choose Starter at $4.99/month for 120 credits, or Pro at $9.99/month for 250 credits.

What is an SRT file?

An SRT (SubRip) file is a plain-text subtitle file that pairs each line of dialogue with start and end timestamps. SubTran reads your .srt, translates the dialogue, and rebuilds the file with the timing left untouched.

Will the timing change?

No. Only the spoken text is translated; timestamps and cue numbers are preserved exactly, so your subtitles stay in sync.

Can I translate subtitles into any language?

You can translate from and into any of our 100+ supported languages, in any direction, for example English to Spanish, Chinese to English, or Japanese to French.

Do I need to install software or create an account?

No installation is required. Your first file can be translated without an account; an account is needed only to buy credits or use a subscription.

Can I translate a full-length movie?

Yes. A typical full-length movie subtitle file translates in about a minute. Keep the browser tab open until it finishes.

Do you keep my subtitle files?

Files are processed to produce the translation. For details on how we handle your data, see our Privacy Policy.

Which subtitle formats are supported?

SubTran supports seven formats: SRT (.srt), WebVTT (.vtt), SBV (.sbv), ASS/SSA (.ass/.ssa), TTML/DFXP (.ttml/.dfxp), SMI/SAMI (.smi/.sami), and LRC (.lrc). Your file downloads in the same format you uploaded, no conversion needed.

How much do paid plans cost?

$1 buys 10 credits. Starter is $4.99/month for 120 credits, and Pro is $9.99/month for 250 credits. Starter and Pro include bulk translation, transcription, SRT generation, and ZIP download.

Which languages can I translate into?

100+ languages, including English, Chinese (Simplified & Traditional), Spanish, Hindi, Arabic, Portuguese, Russian, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Italian, Vietnamese, Thai and many more.

How accurate is the translation?

Our AI subtitle translator generates translations with a large language model that understands context and natural dialogue, so results read far better than word-by-word machine translation. Quality is strongest for widely spoken languages.

Can I get bilingual subtitles with both the original and translation?

Yes. Before translating, switch 'Output mode' to 'Bilingual'. Each subtitle cue in the downloaded file will contain the original line followed by its translation, great for language learners, localization review, or dual-language captions.

Can I bulk translate multiple subtitle files?

Yes. Starter and Pro users can select multiple supported subtitle files, translate them sequentially in one run, and download all results in a single ZIP. Each file counts as one translation.
